Building on the 19th C Academic Painting course, this extended demonstration shows you how to apply the fundamental concepts of academic painting to the creation of a more complex, sophisticated study of the human form.

By analyzing and copying a portion of a beautiful academic nude by Dagnan-Bouveret, at the same scale as the original, we’ll see how a finished figure painting demands that we work in a less mechanical way, making room for flexibility and playfulness.

At the end of this demonstration, you’ll understand how to make the figure come to life small, in manageable steps, giving you the confidence to approach more complex subjects on your own!
